Swoyambhunath or Swayambhu: Ancient pilgrimage architecture situated at the top a hill in the Kathmandu Valley. This stupa is known as Sublime Trees in Tibetan language because of founding of various types of trees on hill.

Swayambhu is counted among topmost sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Temple complex of Swayambhunath comprises of numerous stupa, shrines and temples. Stupa has painted eyes and eyebrows of Lord Buddha upon it. Most of the images and symbols of stupa is related to Vajrayana Buddhism.

The stupa has a dome, representing whole world at base on which a cubical structure painted with eyes of Buddha shown up in all four directions. Eyes on stupa symbolize wisdom and compassion. Number one painted in Devanagari script in fashion of a nose is a sign of unity of all things existing in the world and only one path to got enlightenment.

The name of stupa is derived from valley name Swayambhu which means self created. It came from an eternal self existent flame, svyaṃbhu on which stupa was built. According to Swayambhu Purana, whole valley was once filled with an enormous lake, out of which grew a lotus.

Swayambhu is regarded as Monkey Temple because of a lot of holy monkeys living in the northwest side of temple. These monkeys are holy because Manjushri, a bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism was supposed to leave his hair short but he made it grow long and head lice grew and it is stated that head lice transformed into these monkeys.
